Coco Holding Stamps
I finally got to draw the famous Coco Pops monkey. I’ve been wanting to draw this little guy for a while, and was approached by JWT through The Drawing Book to do so for a new print campaign that’s just hit the press now.
This job went really smoothly thanks to the good team at JWT and was a good chance to do some slick airbrushing in an established style.

Very nice work, Anton! You’re version has a very children’s book feel to it and the colouring gives it real form…
I am a Coco the monkey fan from wayyy back, I remember as a kid the character design was very very different. http://theswca.com/images-food/boxes/cocopops-ewoks-375-f.gif
It is interesting how these characters evolve over time, more than the other cereal characters this guy gets massive redesigns all the time…
I am assuming the version I am familiar with was probably a bastardisation of this guy http://www.retroist.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/jose-the-monkey.jpg Who I reckon looks great! check out this toy http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/public/news_images/4/53981_122196_1.jpg
Yeah, he’s changed a bit! I like the old Coco, too. Unfortunately, there’s none of my design in this version. I had to copy the current approved Coco from various packs. But the interesting thing is, that there is no ‘official’ character guide for him. Every artist seems to have done their own thing. It’s very subtle, so I guess this guy is a little bit mine now, too.
I found him stiff in the face when Phill and I worked on him ages ago-
he’s a tough one to work on.
Well done!
I’m digging your blog- I’m cleverly avoiding copious amounts of work right now by trawling through it all…
hee hee
They really need to bring back that mexican straw hat!
Weird, there is no official character guide, the next artist might copy his from yours and his influence might influence the next artist like chinese whispers.
I have a theory he is slowly evolving into a human.
