Goofballs Single Panel Gag
Goofballs isn’t only a comic strip, but a housing for single panel gags. In fact, I’m planning to mix it up and not have any set panel structure.
Here’s the latest one. I used a rough watercolour paper for this one, and found it hard to ink. I’m used to using this paper with ink washes, but it has a little too much traction for undiluted india ink (for my liking, anyway). Back to smooth Bristol board, I think…

good one!
Just wanted to comment on your single panel gag toon. I’m also into the single panels and
your technique is excellent. unlike your ‘seasoned’ tooners, I’ll draw on just about anything using just about anything to draw with. In other words, I’ve yet to find my niche’ so to speak with regard to what looks good. Your panel,on the other hand, has that ‘pro’ look to it and that’s what gets noticed. Never one to ignore advice, I’d like to know if you’ve any tips….other than sheer stubborness , that will aid me in ‘refining’ my toons.
If you have any time with the remaining 4 % you have left, pop on over to my blog and undr the ‘complete profile’ link, scroll down for samps of my few and far between posts of some of my toons. the rest , unfortunately were lost to the wind, due in large part to poop prep on my part. Anyway….good stuff….great work..and you’ve got a future in this, the world of toon.
Thanks Tim and Dave, I appreciate your comments.
In answer to your question, Tim, I guess the only answer is to practise a lot. Sure, you need some base talent, but I really believe in pushing oneself and constantly learning. I will do this till the day I die; there’s always more to learn. There are lots of good books to read, too. I love the 50′s ones like the Famous Artist Cartooning Course. Look it up – it’s online to download. I printed it out, and even now it has heaps of useful info.
The ‘pro’ look comes from drawing 8 or more hours a day. I’ve been lucky enough to draw for a living, so after 15 years or so, my linework has become more confident. I still have a long way to go, though. Materials play a big part, too. My art relies heavily on a varied line (I use a brush, mainly). When I use different materials (ie. a pen with fixed width line), the look changes. I was never happy with my work until I discovered the brush.
Take care, and good luck with you toons. Looking good!
These are fantastic chap! I expect a new one in my RSS feed everyday now thanks.
Thanx Anton,
I really appreciate your comment on my comments. As I said before, your artwork is excellent
in that it shows what I hope my to eventually show…pure talent and skill. Please, if you have time, pop on to my site, i.e. blog and tell me what you think. It’s a new blog and unfortunately…there is not alot on it, but that will change in the very near future. Til, then..take care and always toon…..Tim
Thanks! I plan to do some more, but it’s been a little hectic settling back in to ‘normal’ life. Will try to get back into them as soon as possible.
