NAFDA Summer 2013

The latest in the NAFDA covers I've created for this foodservice industry rewards magazine.

A quick process: I submitted three thumbnail roughs to the client, all addressing the brief for the chef, kitchenhand and waitress from previous covers surfing a wave.

Thumbnail #3 was chosen, and with some revisions I moved onto the sketch.  The client asked that I add some fun elements into the water, and I was very glad to.  It's not often that a commercial brief asks for 'chicken fat'!

Add linework, colour and you end up with this, below.  The toughest part of this illustration was having to create the background (wave, people in water etc.) and all three characters on separate layers.  Generally, I like to work flat, but this way is a lot more time-consuming.
