Cover art for the current Spectator Australia illustrated Mark Latham’s story on the Craig Thomson / HSU affair and the power brokers behind the scenes. Latham references the Ray Parker Jr. line in the Ghostbusters theme song “Who Ya Gonna Call”, and it seemed only fitting to parody the famous 1985 movie logo.

Here’s a super-fun one for this week’s Spectator Australia cover. It illustrates a great Rowan Dean piece on Independents Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor, picking up on the following paragraph:

A quick process…

Thumbnail roughs are drawn for the Editor to choose. The deadline was tight on this one, so I only offered the one concept, with different angles and tone:

The Editor liked them, but wanted to see another with a classic 60′s Batman feel – a fight scene with ZOW! BAF! sound effects, so I happily obliged:

The last one was approved, so I moved on to a more polished sketch:

Then inked and coloured (digitally) to produce the finished art. Here it is in the final, published cover, below…

This issue is on sale on Friday in Australian newsagents or by subscription.

Giles’ Phatsville Tattoo

Created in 2002 by Giles Kilham, Ben C., Glenn Manders, Tom Scarlett and John Stewart, Phatsville has had a hefty parade of talented Aussie comic artists march through it over the years. It’s funny as hell. And in poor taste. I guess that’s why I like it.

Cover art for the current Spectator Australia illustrates an article by Gregory Melleuish on the denigration and rubbishing of Australia’s past by universities. The author argues for a more objective and even-handed manner of education.

A Very MAD April

This month I have illustrations in both the US and Australian MAD magazines; a spot illo and a full page comic strip.

I’ll post the full artwork in the near future, but for the moment, here are some teasers:

I can’t find the cover image for the Aussie MAD (#472), but it has Lady Gaga on the cover. Here’s US MAD #515:
